Frequently Asked Questions About the CDCP
No. The CDCP is a publicly funded program administered by Sun Life on behalf of the Government of Canada. It is designed specifically for Canadians who do not have access to any form of private dental insurance. It functions differently from employer-sponsored or individually purchased plans, with its own coverage guidelines, benefit grid, and co-payment structure.
No referral is needed. Once you have your Sun Life CDCP member card, you can call our office directly to book an appointment. Simply let us know that you are a CDCP member when you call.
It depends on your income bracket. If your adjusted family net income is under $70,000, there is no co-payment — covered services are fully paid by the CDCP. If your income is between $70,000 and $79,999, you pay 40 percent. If your income is between $80,000 and $89,999, you pay 60 percent. We will always confirm your co-payment amount before beginning treatment.
No. The CDCP is only available to individuals who do not have access to any private dental insurance. This includes coverage available through an employer, a spouse or partner, a union, a professional association, or any individually purchased plan — even if you are not currently enrolled in that coverage.
Processing times vary, but most applications are reviewed within a few weeks. You will receive your Sun Life member card by mail once your application is approved. If you have not received your card and believe you should have, contact Service Canada at 1-833-537-4342 for an update.
Yes. Each eligible family member must apply individually, but the entire family can be covered if each person meets the eligibility criteria. Children under 18 are applied for by a parent or guardian.
