Professional Dental Cleaning and Checkup

Regular dental cleanings and checkups are the foundation of a healthy smile. No matter how diligent you are with brushing and flossing at home, professional care is essential to remove buildup that your toothbrush simply cannot reach, detect problems before they become painful or expensive, and keep your teeth and gums in the best possible condition year after year. At Dentistry On Yorkdale, Dr. B. Rosales Verzonilla and our experienced hygiene team provide thorough, gentle cleanings and comprehensive examinations for patients of all ages at both of our Toronto locations. Whether it has been six months or six years since your last visit, you are always welcome here — and we promise to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Why Professional Cleanings Matter

Even with perfect brushing and flossing habits, there are areas in your mouth that are nearly impossible to clean effectively on your own. The spaces between teeth, the area just below the gum line, and the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth are all places where plaque accumulates despite your best efforts.

When plaque is not removed within 24 to 72 hours, it begins to harden into tartar — also called calculus. Tartar is a rough, mineralized deposit that bonds firmly to the tooth surface and cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. Only a dental professional using specialized instruments can safely remove tartar without damaging the enamel or gum tissue.

Left in place, tartar harbor's bacteria that produce acids and toxins, leading to cavities, gum inflammation (gingivitis), and eventually gum disease (periodontitis). Periodontitis is a serious condition that destroys the bone and tissue supporting your teeth and is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. It has also been linked to systemic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes complications, respiratory infections, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Professional cleanings remove both plaque and tartar from all surfaces of your teeth — including areas you cannot see or reach — and reset your mouth to a clean baseline. Combined with a thorough examination, a professional cleaning appointment is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent dental problems before they start.

What Happens During a Professional Dental Cleaning?

Step 1 — Review of Your Health History

Your appointment begins with a review of your medical and dental history. Our team will ask about any changes to your health, new medications, allergies, or concerns since your last visit. This information is important because many medical conditions and medications affect your oral health — for example, certain drugs cause dry mouth, which significantly increases cavity risk, and conditions like diabetes affect gum healing.

If this is your first visit to Dentistry On Yorkdale, we will take a complete health history and ask about your dental experiences, any concerns you have, and your goals for your oral health.

Step 2 — Initial Examination by the Hygienist

Follow the care label's instructions regarding water temperature. Hot water is suitable for white or heavily soiled items, while cold water is generally gentler on colors and delicate fabrics. Warm water is a middle-ground option suitable for most everyday clothing.

Step 3 — Scaling (Removing Tartar and Plaque)Air dry or tumble dry

Scaling is the core of the professional cleaning. The hygienist uses specialized instruments — either hand scalers, ultrasonic scalers, or a combination of both — to carefully remove plaque and tartar from every surface of every tooth, including above and below the gum line.

Hand scalers are curved metal instruments that the hygienist uses to gently scrape tartar from the tooth surface. Each scaler is shaped to fit a specific area of the mouth — the curved surfaces between teeth, the flat surfaces on the front and back, and the narrow spaces along the gum line.

Ultrasonic scalers use high-frequency vibrations and a stream of water to break up and flush away tartar deposits. They are particularly effective at removing heavy buildup and are gentler on the tooth surface than hand instruments alone. The water spray also helps wash away the loosened debris.
You may hear scraping or vibrating sounds during scaling, and you may feel slight pressure in areas with heavy buildup. If you experience any discomfort, let the hygienist know — we can adjust our technique, apply a topical numbing gel, or use local anesthesia if needed to ensure your comfort.

H3: Step 4 — Polishing

After all tartar and plaque have been removed, the hygienist polishes your teeth using a soft rubber cup attached to a slow-speed handpiece and a mildly abrasive prophylaxis paste. The paste comes in several flavours — you are welcome to choose your favorite.

Polishing serves two purposes. It removes surface stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, and certain foods, leaving your teeth visibly brighter. It also smooths the tooth surfaces, which makes it harder for plaque to adhere to your teeth in the days and weeks following your cleaning.

Step 5 — Flossing

The hygienist flosses between every tooth to remove any remaining paste or debris and to check for areas of tightness, bleeding, or roughness that may indicate early problems. This is also an opportunity for the hygienist to demonstrate proper flossing technique if you would like guidance.

Step 6 — Fluoride Treatment (If Recommended)

Depending on your individual risk for cavities, the hygienist may apply a professional fluoride varnish to your teeth. The varnish is painted on with a small brush and sets quickly. It delivers a concentrated dose of fluoride that strengthens enamel, promotes remineralization, and provides extended protection against acid attacks. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after application to allow the fluoride to fully absorb.

Fluoride treatments are particularly beneficial for children, patients with a history of frequent cavities, patients with dry mouth, and anyone undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Dental Cleanings and Checkups

A standard prophylaxis cleaning typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. If you are also having a comprehensive examination, X-rays, and fluoride treatment, the total appointment time is usually 45 to 60 minutes. First visits and appointments involving scaling and root planing may take longer.

For most patients, a routine cleaning is painless or involves only mild discomfort in areas with sensitivity or heavy buildup. If you experience discomfort, let the hygienist know immediately — we have several options to improve your comfort, including topical numbing gel and adjusted technique. Scaling and root planing is performed under local anesthesia so you will not feel pain during the procedure..

The cost of a cleaning varies depending on the type of cleaning needed and the complexity of your case. Standard prophylaxis cleanings are among the most affordable dental services. Scaling and root planing costs more due to the additional time and expertise involved. Most private dental insurance plans cover the full cost of routine cleanings, and the CDCP covers eligible preventive services for qualifying patients. Our team will verify your coverage before your appointment.

After a standard cleaning, you can eat and drink immediately. If a fluoride varnish was applied, you may be asked to wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking to allow the fluoride to absorb fully. If you had scaling and root planing with local anaesthesia, wait until the numbness wears off before eating to avoid accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.

Yes. The polishing step of a cleaning removes many surface stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, and coloured foods. However, deeper or intrinsic staining (discolouration within the tooth structure) may require professional whitening or other cosmetic treatments. Dr. Verzonilla can advise you on the best approach based on the type of staining you have.

For most patients with good oral health, professional cleanings every 6 months are recommended. However, individuals with gum disease, heavy plaque buildup, or certain medical conditions may need cleanings more frequently (every 3-4 months). Your dentist will assess your oral health and recommend an appropriate cleaning schedule based on your individual needs.
